A Nissan truck chassis is about to make its way onto the U.S. market.
The automaker said Monday that it is working with the United Auto Workers to design a new chassis that could help bring more production of the new Tacoma pickup truck to the U, which is currently based in Europe.
Nissan said it expects the new chassis will be finished by the end of 2018 and will have the capability to accommodate the upcoming Tacoma pickup and Frontier SUV models.
The company is working in partnership with the UAW Local 827, which represents truck and light-duty vehicle workers in the Toledo, Ohio, region, to design the new truck and chassis.
Nissan will be working with local truck parts suppliers to build the chassis, which will be delivered to the Toledo area for testing.
The new chassis, if it is completed, would make the Tacoma the largest truck in the U., according to Nissan.
The new chassis is expected to be significantly more powerful than the current Tacoma, which uses a 1.4-liter EcoBoost engine.
It also is expected for the truck to be lighter, and have a shorter wheelbase.
The current Tacoma pickup is designed for the Uaw Local 828 and the new vehicle will use a 3.5-liter V6, which Nissan says has been designed to be the most powerful engine in the market.
The current truck has a 2.6-liter diesel engine.
The upcoming Tacoma is the latest in a string of new trucks to roll off the assembly line.
Nissan says the truck is the company’s first new-generation pickup since 2009.
Nissan’s Tacoma and Frontier SUVs will join the Tacoma pickup lineup in 2019.
